The Houston Rockets signed Austin Rivers for the remainder of the season, the team announced Monday.

Rivers became a free agent last week when the Phoenix Suns waived him shortly after acquiring him from the Washington Wizards in the Trevor Ariza trade. The signing gives Houston another option at point guard while Chris Paul remains on the shelf with a hamstring injury.

Rivers served as Paul's backup for two-and-a-half seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, where there was widely reported friction between the two. However, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski there were no internal objections to the signing.
