Brewers trade Domingo Santana to Mariners
The Seattle Mariners acquired outfielder Domingo Santana from the Milwaukee Brewers, the team announced Friday.
Santana, 26, has long been mentioned in trade rumors as Milwaukee has a surplus of talent in the outfield. After a breakout 2017 campaign in which Santana posted an .875 OPS with 30 homers and 15 stolen bases, the right-hander regressed substantially last season, earning a demotion to Triple-A. In 85 games at the major-league level, Santana authored a .265/.328/.412 slash line with five dingers and one stolen base.
Santana is heading into his first season of arbitration eligibility and will not become a free agent until after the 2021 season.
In exchange, Milwaukee is set to receive outfielder Ben Gamel and right-handed reliever Noah Zavolas.
Gamel played all three outfield positions for the Mariners last year, primarily working at the corner spots. Over 101 games, the 26-year-old owned a .272/.358/.370 slash line with one home run and seven stolen bases. Gamel has four years of team control remaining.
Zavolas is a 22-year-old relief prospect who earned a promotion to High-A this past season. Over 38 2/3 innings across two minor-league levels, the right-hander allowed 15 runs - 13 earned - on 29 hits and nine walks with 41 strikeouts.
