Report: Mariners discussing Santana with multiple teams
The Seattle Mariners only acquired Carlos Santana on Monday, but it looks like there's a chance he'll never play a game with them.
While the Mariners are telling teams they're fine with holding on to the first baseman, they've already had discussions with multiple clubs about moving him, sources told The Athletic's Jayson Stark.
The Phillies - Santana's employers in 2018 - apparently received calls from several teams interested in the 32-year-old if Philadelphia was willing to eat some of the $34.5 million (excluding signing bonus money) left on his salary over the next two seasons. Stark presumes Seattle would have to do the same in order to make a deal.
Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto has made five trades this offseason and seems open to swinging more deals heading into the winter meetings.
"We’re likely to continue with conversations about the possibility of other things, but I suspect we’ll be generally quiet until we get to the winter meetings," he said Monday, according to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times.
Santana hit a career-low .229 with Philadelphia last season, but still managed 24 home runs, 86 RBIs, and a .352 on-base percentage (including 110 walks) in 161 games.
The Dominican owns a career .247/.363/.442 slash line with 198 homers and 673 RBIs through nine major-league seasons.
