CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) Miami wide receiver Ahmmon Richards will no longer be allowed to play football because of a disabling neck injury.

The 16th-ranked Hurricanes made the announcement on Sunday. Richards will remain enrolled at Miami and the university will honor his scholarship.

Richards says he is ''extremely appreciative of the university's athletic training and medical staffs for diagnosing this injury.'' School officials did not reveal specifics of the injury, or how it happened.

Richards' status had been a mystery virtually all season. He played sparingly in Miami's opener against LSU, catching one ball for nine yards and not playing since - initially because of a knee issue.

Richards appeared in 21 games with the Hurricanes over parts of three seasons. He caught 74 passes for 1,382 yards and six touchdowns.
