Manager Buck Showalter will not be returning to the Baltimore Orioles, the team announced Wednesday.

Showalter, whose contract was due to expire at the end of October, was informed of his dismissal when he met with team ownership on Wednesday, according to Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com.

In a statement through his own spokesman to Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports, Showalter said: "The organization, city and fans will always have a special place in my heart. Baltimore will always feel like home to Angela and myself. Thank you for the memories."

The Orioles posted a league-worst 47-115 record in 2018 and traded away franchise player Manny Machado in July. The team is entering a rebuild, and Showalter will not be around to oversee the process.

Showalter spent parts of nine seasons as the Orioles' skipper after taking over from interim manager Juan Samuel in August 2010. The Orioles went 669-684 with Showalter at the helm, making three trips to the postseason.

After his club finished first in the American League East in 2014 with a 96-66 record, Showalter was named AL Manager of the Year. That Orioles team was later swept by the Kansas City Royals in the ALCS.

The Orioles join the Los Angeles Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins, and Texas Rangers as teams moving on from managers. The Cincinnati Reds are considering the status of interim manager Jim Riggleman while also looking at other options.

Baltimore also dismissed general manager Dan Duquette on Wednesday.
