A competitive game from Spain's top flight will be hosted in the United States on a date yet to be confirmed by La Liga.

President of La Liga, Javier Tebas, described the deal as "ground-breaking," according to BBC Sport. The agreement is understood to be part of the 15-year partnership between La Liga and media company Relevant, the group behind preseason competition the International Champions Cup.

In November 2015, Tebas was quoted by Rohan Banerjee of the Daily Mail saying that an El Clasico affair - the storied rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona - would be spared a Stateside billing. The pair dueled outside Spain for the first time since 1991 when they played a 2017 friendly in Miami, and both were in the country this summer for matches in preparation for the 2018-19 campaign.

La Liga told BBC Sport it cannot disclose "the teams, match, date, or season" for the league fixture in the United States.

"This extraordinary joint venture is the next giant leap in growing soccer's popularity in North America," said Stephen Ross, chairman and owner of Relevent.

"This unique relationship will create new opportunities for millions of North American soccer fans to experience the most passionate, exciting, and highest level of soccer in the world."

Sunday's Supercopa de Espana was held in Morocco, the first time it hasn't been fought for on home soil. Barcelona beat Sevilla 2-1, with Gerard Pique and Ousmane Dembele vanquishing Pablo Sarabia's early opener for the Andalusians.
