San Francisco Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto will undergo Tommy John surgery on Thursday, the team announced Wednesday.

He will miss the entire 2019 season, according to USA TODAY's Bob Nightengale.

Cueto missed over two months earlier in the season with what was originally diagnosed as a sprained elbow, before returning in July and making four starts. He hasn't pitched since July 28, and after that final outing admitted to being in pain on every pitch.

The veteran was brilliant in his first five starts this season before hitting the DL, posting a 0.84 ERA in 32 innings. In four starts after his DL stint, the results were the complete opposite, as Cueto registered a 6.86 ERA in 21 innings.

The 32-year-old is in the third season of a six-year, $130-million contract that includes a $22-million club option for an additional seventh campaign.
