Syndergaard lands on DL with hand, foot, and mouth disease

Even with all the injuries that the New York Mets have endured over the years, this is a new one.

Assistant general manager John Ricco announced Sunday that Noah Syndergaard was placed on the 10-day disabled list after contracting hand, foot, and mouth disease.

Ricco said the right-hander possibly picked up the infection while working with kids at a camp over the All-Star break, according to James Wagner of the New York Times.

Mets manager Mickey Callaway believes the illness was the reason for Syndergaard's decrease in velocity during his last start Friday, in which he complained of having trouble breathing.

"He was just weak, run-down. I think the virus just took its toll," Callaway said, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.

Syndergaard returned from the DL earlier this week after missing seven weeks with a strained ligament in his right index finger. He's posted a 2.89 ERA and 1.25 WHIP across 13 starts this season.
