Report: Mets discussing retirement with Reyes rather than release
When the New York Mets made the late-night announcement Sunday that they had released first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, questions immediately arose about the team's plans for Jose Reyes, who has struggled mightily this season.
The Mets are apparently hoping to work with Reyes on an alternative exit to a straight release, possibly in the form of a retirement news conference, reports Andy Martino of SNY.tv.
"I haven't heard anything about that," Mets manager Mickey Callaway told reporters Sunday, including Justin Tasch and John Healy of the New York Daily News.
Reyes, who has played the majority of his career with New York and is well-liked by the organization and in the team's clubhouse, could still be seeking opportunities with other clubs, Martino adds, which may be the delay in a decision being made.
The veteran infielder, who turned 35 on Monday, has struggled to a .149/.213/.203 slash line in 43 games with the Mets and hasn't had more than two plate appearances in a game since May 29.
