The Washington Nationals have placed utility man Howie Kendrick on the 10-day disabled list.

The 34-year-old was carted off the field with a right Achilles injury in the first game of a doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, per Mark Zuckerman of MASN.

In a corresponding move ahead of the second game of the doubleheader, the Nationals promoted right-handed pitcher Jefry Rodriguez.

Normally a second baseman, Kendrick was filling in as left fielder for Washington when he suffered the Achilles injury. He tweaked his ankle while making a catch and collapsing after throwing the relay throw into the infield during the eighth inning.

With Kendrick down and Matt Adams as the everyday left fielder, Wilmer Difo will likely slot in as the Nationals' second baseman going forward.

Over 40 games with Washington after signing a two-year, $7-million deal this winter, the veteran Kendrick owns a .302/.331/.477 slash line with four home runs and one stolen base.
