Pirates to call up No. 2 prospect Austin Meadows for Friday's game

Austin Meadows is finally heading to the show.

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that Meadows - their No. 2 prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline and a former top-10 draft pick - will be called up from Triple-A prior to Friday's game against the San Diego Padres.

Meadows will be summoned to take the place of outfielder Starling Marte, who is expected to land on the 10-day disabled list with a right oblique strain, according to The Athletic's Rob Biertempfel. Marte is not expected to be on the DL for long, however, meaning that Meadows' trip to Pittsburgh may be brief.

Meadows was the Pirates' first-round pick (ninth overall) in 2013, and was formerly the organization's top prospect for several years. But his rise through the farm system has been slowed by injuries, including an orbital bone fracture in 2016 and a torn hamstring that limited him to 81 contests last year.

The 23-year-old is hitting .294/.336/.397 with a home run and 15 stolen bases through 31 games with the International League's Indianapolis Indians in 2018. He's currently riding a seven-game hitting streak.
