Report: Arteta a strong favourite to succeed Wenger at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has apparently emerged as a strong favourite to head up a fresh generation at Arsenal.

The Spaniard, who's currently working within Pep Guardiola's backroom team at Manchester City, is even giving thought to who he'd like in his own coaching staff at the Emirates Stadium, according to the Guardian's David Hynter. This development comes after Arteta and the Arsenal hierarchy held productive talks over him potentially succeeding Arsene Wenger in north London.

It's unknown whether Steve Bould will continue as No. 2 at Arsenal. Hynter believes the former defender didn't have an easy relationship with Arteta when he played for the club.

Massimiliano Allegri was an early front-runner for the Arsenal job, but it's understood he would now prefer to stay with Juventus after the Gunners were reluctant to hand him control over budgets and recruitment. Arsenal is looking for someone to assume a post that's more reminiscent of a head coach, with Sven Mislintat and Raul Sanllehi recently brought in to oversee scouting and transfer business, respectively.

Patrick Vieira, handler of MLS outfit New York City FC, was contacted by Arsenal regarding the vacancy, sources told Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol. However, the Frenchman was apparently disappointed because he felt it was a token gesture due to his legendary status with the club, and that his candidacy wasn't taken seriously. Solhekol also claimed that Belgium national team assistant and Arsenal icon Thierry Henry hasn't been contacted about the role, while former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique is asking for too much in salary.

Arteta is popular with Arsenal fans after he expertly conducted the midfield between 2011 and 2016. He then swiftly joined Guardiola's revolution at Manchester City, but now appears to be on the verge of his first job in management after two years of coaching at the new Premier League champion.

Guardiola has indicated he won't stand in the way if Arteta wants to leave for the Arsenal job, but has spoken of his importance at Manchester City.

"My opinion about Mikel is overwhelming. One of the reasons for our success this season is because Mikel is here," the Catalonian said last month.

"We are so comfortable, not just me, working with him."
