Giants' McCutchen, Longoria, Jackson go 2-for-43 through 1st series

The San Francisco Giants made some headline moves this offseason, and the trio of bats they acquired to fix their lethargic offense are off to a cold start.

In blockbuster offseason deals, the Giants acquired Andrew McCutchen from the Pittsburgh Pirates and Evan Longoria from the Tampa Bay Rays. To cap off an active winter, San Francisco signed Austin Jackson to a two-year, $6-million deal, all with the goal of improving a league-worst offense from last season.

Through the team's first series - a four-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers - the trio combined to go 2-for-43 with one double and 14 strikeouts.

Despite those three failing to provide much at the dish, the Giants came away from Los Angeles with a series split, shutting out their biggest rivals for the first 18 innings and winning a pair of 1-0 games. By the end of Sunday's contest, the Dodgers had outscored the Giants 14-2 with the home team shutting out the visitors for the final two games of the series. Both clubs own a 2-2 record.

It was a historically bad start to the season even though the Giants walk away with a .500 record. Having scored two runs over four games, San Francisco broke the franchise record for fewest runs scored over its first four games. The previous record was six, set in 1920 and tied in 1933.

The Giants will host the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday for their home opener. After that two-game series, San Francisco is set to face the Dodgers again at AT&T Park.
