Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts left Saturday's contest against the Tampa Bay Rays as one of the hottest hitters in the league and etched himself into baseball's history books in the process.

After going 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, the 25-year-old became the first player in Red Sox history to have multiple extra-base hits in the first three games of a season, according to MLB.com's Ian Browne.

Bogaerts had two doubles in each of his first two games this year.

With Saturday's performance, he also became just the second MLB player - joining Adrian Gonzalez, who did it in 2015 - to accomplish the feat in the last 100 years, according to Browne who cites the Elias Sports Bureau.

Bogaerts is hitting .667 with a 2.000 OPS through three games.
