Chicago White Sox third-base prospect Jake Burger went to the ground, clutching his left leg while running to first base in Monday's Cactus League game against the Oakland Athletics. He was carted off the field for further evaluation.

If the White Sox feared the worst, they got it. Burger suffered a ruptured left Achilles tendon and will undergo surgery to repair it in Chicago later in the week, the team announced. Burger is expected to miss the entire 2018 season.

"(It) honestly felt like a gunshot," Burger told Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times. "Nothing really to say. It sucks, just have to stay positive."

Burger was drafted 11th overall in 2017. In 47 games in Single-A, he hit .271/.335/.409 with four home runs and 27 RBIs.
