Salah credits Klopp for superb goal-scoring rate at Liverpool

Mohamed Salah has defied expectations, notching 30 goals in all competitions for Liverpool in his debut season at Anfield, and the Egyptian winger credits one man for his unexpected rise: manager Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp's tactical style is an important factor in Salah's scoring tally, with Liverpool emphasising a forward press that allows him to see more of the ball than most wingers. But he is also afforded a position that allows him the freedom to roam a bit higher up the field, the factor he credits most for his success this year.

"With the boss here, I play a little bit closer to the goal, more so than at any other club or more than any of my other coaches have asked me to," Salah told Liverpool's matchday programme, as quoted by ESPN FC.

"So I am always in front of the goal to give me the opportunity to score. The manager is always telling me to stay close to the goal in training.

"I don't want to say too much because we still have a long way to go in the season and I don't want to give too much away. But yes, it's something we have worked on in the training sessions."

That change in positioning has turned Salah into an out-and-out goal-scorer, and at 22 goals in the Premier League over the course of 26 matches, he has already outscored his previous career best of 15 goals for AS Roma in the 2016-17 Serie A campaign.

Salah will need to keep pace with Tottenham striker Harry Kane, who leads the Premier League's Golden Boot race by just one goal, but has done so by recording 150 shots to Salah's 103. As such, the 25-year-old sees a chance to become even more clinical and add more to his personal tally.

"You cannot score 10 goals from 10 balls - that's impossible and I know that I have missed many chances too this season," Salah offered. "But I am trying to improve. I am always trying to see my weaknesses and then work on them and I am always trying to score in different ways."
