Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo delivered an emotional and heartfelt speech at a vigil in Florida on Thursday, addressing the shooting that took the lives of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School a day prior.
Rizzo, who attended the school before he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2007, left spring training in Arizona to speak at the event. He offered his support to the community, and to the school that he said made him into the person he is today.
In November, Rizzo donated $150,000 to improve its baseball and softball fields.
The 28-year-old All-Star and his family apparently knew some of the victims of the incident, including football coach Aaron Feis, who lost his life while protecting students from gunfire.
A 19-year-old former student of the school has been confirmed as the gunman and was taken into custody about an hour after Wednesday's shooting.
