Jose Mourinho is close to signing a new contract with Manchester United that will run until June 2021 with an option for a further 12 months, reports James Ducker of the Telegraph.

Mourinho's current deal runs until June 2019, but includes an additional year option. The Portuguese tactician hasn't put pen to paper on his new contract just yet, but Ducker believes it's a formality as negotiations have progressed swiftly in the last month.

The former Chelsea, Internazionale, and Real Madrid manager took over at the Red Devils in 2016, replacing Louis van Gaal. He has since overseen the integration of new stars like Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Romelu Lukaku, and guided the club to its first-ever Europa League title.

The club is happy with progress under Mourinho, according to Ducker, who reports the club hierarchy believes he has "raised standards and restored a winning mentality" within the team. Mourinho, who turns 55 later in the month, affirmed his intention to stay at Old Trafford for the long haul:

"I am going to leave when the club wants me to leave because I have no intention to leave at all. My intention is to stay and to work and to improve and to bring the club to where the club belongs."
