Utah's Whittingham says late timeout was team 'trying to be aggressive'

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham had some explaining to do regarding a late timeout called against Washington that eventually led to a Huskies victory.

With the Huskies offense possessing the ball on their own 30-yard line, Whittingham elected to call a timeout with 23 seconds remaining in regulation and the score tied 30-30. The move wound up backfiring on the Utes bench boss, as Washington completed multiple passes before kicking the game-winning field goal as time expired to seal the win.

In his postgame press conference, Whittingham explained the rationale behind his decision.

"At the end there it was tied, they came out and ran the ball so we called timeout trying to get the ball back thinking they were going to be aggressive...We have a great field goal kicker, and that was the reason for that timeout, trying to be aggressive and get the ball back," Whittingham said.

The loss dropped Utah to a dismal 2-6 in conference play this season, while the Huskies earned their sixth conference win.
