The San Francisco 49ers sent shockwaves throughout the NFL by trading for Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots, but they made the move without first agreeing to a contract extension with the quarterback, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
While the 49ers will obviously try to extend Garoppolo, a deal between the team and its newly acquired franchise player isn't "imminent," added Rapoport.
Garoppolo has a chance to boost his value in the second half of the season, while the 49ers are likely looking to evaluate him before committing to a big-money extension, knowing they have the franchise tag to fall back on.
