Report: Miguel Cabrera's wife filed for divorce before season

Detroit Tigers superstar Miguel Cabrera just completed the worst season of his legendary playing career. Now it appears a summer of off-field distractions may have played a part in his downswing.

According to Tony Paul of the Detroit News, Cabrera's wife, Rosangel, filed for divorce shortly before the 2017 season began.

Rosangel filed for divorce in a Miami court on March 17 and a final hearing is scheduled for this coming Monday, Paul reports. In the filing, Rosangel reportedly claimed her relationship with Miguel was "irretrievably broken."

The revelation about Cabrera's divorce proceedings comes just one week after it was revealed that the two-time MVP is embroiled in a lawsuit with a Florida woman who claims he cut off child support for their two children. Cabrera has apparently countered the woman's claim with his own allegations of extortion.

Cabrera's deposition for that lawsuit had been scheduled for Thursday, but has since been moved to Oct. 27, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reported.

Cabrera, who made history by winning the American League Triple Crown in 2012, fell off his Hall of Fame-caliber production in 2017 and turned in his worst statistical season since his 87-game rookie campaign in 2003. The 34-year-old's slash line dropped to a career-low .249/.329/.399 with just 16 homers, 50 runs scored, and minus-0.2 WAR - the first time he's compiled a negative WAR total - in 130 games.

Cabrera has another six years and $184 million in guaranteed money remaining on his contract with the Tigers. He's set to earn $30 million in each of the next four seasons.
