Roberts: 'Pretty clear to us' Contreras violated home-plate rule

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is offering the Chicago Cubs minimal consolation following Saturday's debated play at the plate.

As Dodgers shortstop Charlie Culberson raced toward home in the seventh inning of Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, Cubs outfielder Kyle Schwarber unleashed a near-perfect throw from left field that appeared to nab Culberson just in time. The Dodgers, however, were suspicious of catcher Willson Contreras' positioning on the play, and their doubts were proven right when a video review ruled Contreras illegally used his leg to block the shortstop from touching the plate.

Speaking to reporters postgame, Roberts gave the Cubs credit for nearly pulling off the difficult play, but the Dodgers skipper held firm in his opinion that replay helped the umpires make the right decision.

"I think it was a heck of a throw by Kyle out there in left field. Contreras made a great play, athletic play. But as the rule states, he was in violation," Roberts said, according to ASAP Sports. "I looked at it just like everyone looked at it, and as the rule states, he was in violation. So it was pretty clear to us, so that's kind of pretty simple."

One person in definite disagreement with the umpiring crew, though, was Cubs skipper Joe Maddon, who was incensed when the initial out call was overturned and promptly ejected for voicing his displeasure.

Following the contest, the Cubs manager continued his tirade, telling reporters he "could not disagree more" with the implementation of the rule.
