Lue invites Perkins to join Cavs coaching staff

Unless some team really badly needs a veteran voice in the locker room or a break-in-case-of-emergency big man, the playing career of Kendrick Perkins is likely over.

What Perkins does next is up to him. But if coaching is something he's interested in, he can have a gig next to Tyronn Lue on the Cleveland Cavaliers' bench.

"We've already talked about that," Lue told Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com, on the subject of Perkins joining his staff. "I think Perk was great because he holds everybody accountable. He plays the right way, tries to do the right thing every single day."

"You need a guy like that around. A guy who's going to be the right person for the team, not worrying about himself, not being caught up in all his own personal things and will help the team out in any way he can."

Perkins confirmed that he would be interested in coaching, but that he's still focused on landing a roster spot. That likely won't be possible with Cleveland, given that they're already carrying 15 guaranteed salaries. But some other team may come calling.

And if nobody else does, the 13-year grizzled veteran will definitely give Lue a call. Perkins has played with several current and future Hall of Famers in his career and has been beloved at every stop.

"Me and Lue go way back and that's definitely something I'll take under consideration," Perkins said.
