Cubs' flight to L.A. diverted after family member takes ill

A long cross-country trip turned even longer for the Chicago Cubs following their wild Game 5 victory and celebration in Washington on Thursday night.

The Cubs' overnight charter flight from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles was diverted to Albuquerque, N.M., early Friday morning after a family member of someone on the team needed medical attention, according to Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune.

The plane landed at Albuquerque International Sunport at approximately 6:30 a.m. CT (7:30 a.m. ET) and remained there for approximately five hours. A replacement pilot also apparently had to be found in order to continue the flight, as the initial pilot ran out of hours and wasn't allowed to continue.

The Cubs confirmed the plane's diversion to Kuc, and added that the team's journey to Los Angeles resumed at around 11 a.m. CT.

There is no word on the condition of the person who took ill on the flight, though MLB Network's Jon Morosi reported that it was not a life-threatening situation.

Once they finally arrive in Hollywood after what's turned into a nearly 10-hour odyssey, Chicago will get one day for some much-needed rest before playing the Dodgers in Game 1 of the NLCS on Saturday night at Chavez Ravine.
