Fields' commitment to Georgia means one of Eason, Fromm must go

Georgia has landed a five-star quarterback for the second time in three years, and that has created quite the situation for head coach Kirby Smart.

A surplus of talent is one of the nicer problems Smart could ask for as a head coach, but Friday's commitment from No. 1 overall recruit Justin Fields has caused his quarterback dynamic to switch from two being company to three definitely being a crowd.

Simply put, there isn't enough room at Georgia for Jacob Eason, Jake Fromm, and Fields. One of them - at least one - must go.

The fact that Fields elected to join a program with two well-established talents already in place is telling. It's highly unlikely that the nation's top recruit would join a program that would make him wait one or even two years to have any sort of real impact, so that raises questions as to what Smart's future plans are, if any, for his two resident gunslingers.

Eason joined Georgia as the top-rated quarterback in the class of 2016 and Fromm was a highly-touted four-star recruit in his own right, but what makes their cases even more interesting is what they have been able to accomplish on the field thus far. Eason made his case as Georgia's future following last season, but Fromm's current five-game winning streak and blemish-free record in Eason's absence due to injury has already had some crying controversy.

Assuming Fields is locked into Smart's long-term plans, an upcoming transfer from either Eason or Fromm wouldn't be a shocking development. A more interesting scenario would be if both players feel they are better off elsewhere, but given that they have both staked their claim for Georgia's starting job, it's more likely that one remains behind while Fields gets acclimated with the level of competition.

In the interest of discussion, let's take a quick peek at a few programs that could potentially have a fit for either man should they explore an external option.

Eason took an official visit to Washington prior to committing to Georgia, and the Huskies would be a potential fit with no apparent internal lock to take over following Jake Browning's eventual departure. Eason also visited Florida, but the chances of joining the Gators to compete for time with highly-touted Feleipe Franks is far less enchanting.

Fromm also received offers from multiple programs who could be looking for quarterback security in the near future, including Michigan State, Nebraska, and North Carolina. The possibilities are not limited to those only highlighted by previous offers of course, but the vast amount of interest from reputable programs makes it clear that neither individual would last very long on the open market.

Judging by Friday's developments, that time could come sooner rather than later.
