Report: Tigers to interview Fredi Gonzalez for manager job

The Detroit Tigers appear to have their eye on a former big-league skipper to potentially take over as their next manager.

Detroit will interview Fredi Gonzalez for the vacant position on Thursday, according to a source of The Athletic's Katie Strang.

The Tigers received permission to interview Gonzalez from the Miami Marlins, where he serves as third base coach, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.

Gonzalez fits the description of an experienced manager, which Tigers GM Al Avila told reporters, including Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press, is a priority in the current search. The 53-year-old Gonzalez managed the Marlins from 2007-10 and the Atlanta Braves from 2011-16.

The Cuban-born Gonzalez, who owns a 710-692 record in the big leagues, is among a list of potential candidates the Tigers are reportedly interested in, including Omar Vizquel, Dave Clark and Lloyd McClendon.
