Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan avoided a serious setback Wednesday after taking a blow in League Cup action.

"It was a tough situation for him but I think Ilkay will be OK," manager Pep Guardiola told reporters. "He has a small issue with his knee, but not like before, and I don't think it will be anything serious."

Gundogan will undergo a scan Thursday to determine the extent of the problem.

City supporters held their collective breath as Gundogan crumpled to the ground following a risky tackle from West Brom's Claudio Yacob.

The Argentine was shown a yellow card for sliding in from behind.

It was the German's first start for City since last December, when he tore the ACL in his right knee.

This time, however, it was his left that caused him discomfort.

Gundogan put in a fine performance before leaving the pitch in the 57th minute, helping to set up Leroy Sane's opening tally.

The 26-year-old made his first appearance since the devastating injury in last weekend's 6-0 thrashing of Watford.

Yacob scored West Brom's equaliser in the 72nd minute to rub salt into the wounds, but Sane's left-footed curler eventually secured City's passage to the fourth round.
