GSP on potential McGregor bout: I don't target guys in lower weight classes

When it comes to legacy fights, Georges St-Pierre would rather make like the Jeffersons and move up than down.

Speaking to ESPN prior to UFC 216 this past weekend, the welterweight great didn't appear too high on moving down to 155 pounds to challenge the promotion's cash cow, Conor McGregor. The Irishman was incessantly attached to St-Pierre's comeback bout when the Quebec native inked a deal to return to the UFC earlier this year, but St-Pierre said middleweight champ Michael Bisping - his dance partner at UFC 217 - remains at the top of the docket.

"Everything is possible but everybody is targeting Conor McGregor because the money," St-Pierre said, according to MMA Fighting's Jed Meshew. "He’s the money fight. But I don’t challenge guys that compete in lower weight class divisions. For me, I don’t do that. I’m going up to fight Michael Bisping now. I’m looking up.

"He’s an amazing fighter, it would be an amazing honor, but I don’t know. I don’t know what to say. If the fans want it and he wants it maybe it will happen but right now, I’m focused on Bisping."

St-Pierre also shot down rumblings he'd attended UFC 196, where McGregor first fought Nate Diaz, in an effort to put the gears for a date with the lightweight champ in motion. Even if he had, those designs would have taken a back seat to his middleweight foray, as St-Pierre revealed at the UFC 217 presser he's contractually obligated to face interim divisional champ Robert Whittaker in a title unification bout if he dethrones Bisping.

The 36-year-old challenges Bisping for the middleweight throne on Nov. 4 at Madison Square Garden.
