J.D. Martinez joined baseball lore during Monday's outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers, as the Arizona Diamondbacks slugger crushed four home runs, becoming the 18th player in MLB history to do so in a single game.

Martinez is the first-ever member of the Diamondbacks to hit four homers in one game, and the second player to do it this season. Cincinnati Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett went deep four times in June in a 13-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Despite the four home runs in his 4-for-5 night, Martinez finished with six RBIs, four below Gennett's tally in June.

"It's one of those days where you don't want the game to end," Martinez said, according to Brad Galli of WXYZ Detroit ABC TV. "You just want it to keep going."

No player has ever hit five homers in a single game.

Following the contest, Martinez met with the lucky fans who caught his fourth home run, agreeing to trade them a signed bat and baseballs in exchange for the milestone ball itself.

Martinez was acquired by the Diamondbacks on July 18 from the Detroit Tigers. In exchange, Arizona sent Detroit prospects Dawel Lugo, Sergio Alcantara, and Jose King. Since joining the Diamondbacks, Martinez is now slashing .237/.323/.597 with 14 home runs in 39 games, though he owns a .277/.362/.617 slash line on the season.

The Diamondbacks went on to defeat the Dodgers 13-0.
