Mets' Harvey to start Wednesday on 3 days' rest

Matt Harvey's return to the mound after more than two months on the disabled list didn't go so well on Saturday. But he's getting right back on the horse, for better or worse.

In Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies, the 28-year-old right-hander will start on only three days' rest for the first time in his career. Manager Terry Collins told SportsNet New York's Steve Gelbs that he wanted "back on the mound as soon as possible."

Harvey lasted only two innings in the New York Mets' 12-8 loss to the Houston Astros. Despite the shortened outing, he still threw 70 pitches en route to allowing seven earned runs on eight hits. In a season that has been largely lost to injury and ineffectiveness, he apparently wants to get his work in.

The Mets have been plagued by injuries all year, which has contributed to the team's underwhelming 58-78 record entering play Monday.

The team does have six healthy pitchers who have been used in the starting rotation, but Tommy Milone was used in relief of Harvey on Saturday, limiting the team's options. Still, rosters also expanded Sept. 1, so reinforcements should be available.

After returning successfully from Tommy John surgery in 2015, Harvey has stumbled in parts of two seasons. Since the beginning of 2016, he has gone 8-14 with a 5.35 ERA and 1.49 WHIP over 31 starts. It was revealed earlier this year that his throwing shoulder had "totally atrophied," leading to his most recent DL stint.
