Mets' Harvey shelled by Astros in return from DL

Troy Taormina / USA TODAY Sports

Matt Harvey's return from the disabled list for the New York Mets on Saturday was mediocre at best, as the 28-year-old had to be relieved by Tommy Milone after just two innings of work after getting beat up by the Houston Astros.

Prior to Saturday's contest, the last time Harvey pitched in a game was back on June 14. Since then, he has been sidelined with "totally atrophied" right shoulder muscles.

Through his two innings of work, he allowed seven runs - all earned - on eight hits, including a two-run homer courtesy of George Springer. Springer's home run came on his second at-bat, after he was hit by a pitch from Harvey to lead it off for the Astros in the bottom of the first inning.

Harvey threw 70 pitches with 43 for strikes. His fastball averaged just under 93 mph, which is substantially lower than his career average of 96.2, and even a tick below his 2017 average of 94.6, prior to his stay on the disabled list.

The Astros have had by far the best offense in baseball this year, posting a 123 wRC+ as a club coming into Saturday. Harvey's return to the Mets also coincided with the Astros' return to Minute Maid Park, after Tropical Storm Harvey forced the club to play a home series at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. - home of the Tampa Bay Rays.
