Garcia breaks flatstick in anger; makes birdie with 3-wood at TPC Boston

Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

A quick outburst of rage cost Sergio Garcia his putter for the rest of Sunday at the Dell Technologies Championship.

Garcia hit his tee shot just off the green at the short par-4 fourth hole, leaving a relatively simple up-and-down for birdie. The reigning Masters champion elected to use his flatstick for his second shot, but rolled a poor putt towards the hole, leaving a 14-foot birdie attempt. Clearly unhappy with his stroke, the Spaniard smashed his putter off a sprinkler head, altering the loft and lie of the club.

Since the putter wasn't damaged in the normal course of play, the club may not be replaced, meaning Garcia was forced to use one of his 13 other clubs in the bag for the remainder of the round.

Garcia decided to use his 3-wood, and wound up making birdie to move to 2-under par for the tournament.
