Phillies' rookie phenom Hoskins exits after 98 mph fastball to wrist

Steve Mitchell / USA TODAY Sports

Rhys Hoskins hit his 12th home run in 24 games Saturday against the Miami Marlins. That's the good news.

The bad news is, after going 3-for-3 and being a triple shy of the cycle, Hoskins was hit on the wrist with a pitch in his next at-bat. Initially, Hoskins stayed in the game before being lifted as part of a double switch in the bottom of the seventh inning, according to CSN Philly's Walter Villa.

Hoskins said his hand was bruised and swollen, but initial X-rays came back negative, according to Matt Breen of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"It’s 98 to the hand," Hoskins said. "So obviously there was some pain. It got me just above my wrist and my palm."

The 24-year-old Hoskins has been the feel good hit of the Phillies' summer after the team languished in the NL East basement for most of the season. He's cruised to a .318/.420/.776 in limited action while making the most of his at-bats with the 12 bombs and 27 RBIs.

He's already amassed quite the run in a short period of time. He's the first player ever with 10 homers before playing in his 20th game, he tied a club record with long balls in five straight games, and he even jump started a triple play. And all that came after he completed such a torrid stretch that he inspired people to ask "just who the heck is this Hoskins character?"

The Phillies went on to lose Saturday's game 10-9, but may have lost so much more depending on Hoskins' status. Even in a season full of bad losses, this one likely hurt most of all.
