Angels acquire Justin Upton from Tigers

The Los Angeles Angels made a huge splash prior to Thursday's deadline, acquiring outfielder Justin Upton from the Detroit Tigers.

The deal was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Right-handed pitching prospect Grayson Long is going back to Detroit in the deal, as well as a player to be named later and cash considerations. Long was ranked the No. 9 prospect in the Angels' system by MLB Pipeline.

The Tigers will send some money to the Angels in order to cover a small part of Upton's salary this season, but they're free of any future financial commitments, reports Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

Tigers general manager Al Avila described Long as "a standout player ... in the Southern League that features some of the best prospects in baseball

"Grayson is a workhorse-type starter who throws strikes and has a great makeup. Our scouts project him to be a starter at the major-league level. As for Upton, he has been a consummate professional in his time here, and the Tigers wish him and his family all the best moving forward."

Upton has an opt-out clause he can exercise at the end of this season, but according to one of Rosenthal's sources, that didn't deter the Angels from pursuing the 30-year-old. Though Upton's contract includes limited no-trade protection, the Angels weren't among the 20 teams he could block from acquiring him.

The outfielder is owed $88.5 million through 2021 and reportedly informed the Tigers he will opt out of his deal at the end of the season, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

The 11-year veteran joined the Tigers as a free agent in 2016. After struggling with consistency in his first season in Detroit, Upton rebounded this year, earning his fourth All-Star nod. In 125 games, he's hitting .279/.362/.542 with 28 home runs and 94 RBIs.
