The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes to be their eventual replacement for Alex Smith, but if the veteran quarterback doesn't watch out, his replacement may come sooner than later.

Smith showed a more aggressive style than usual in his first preseason game and continued doing so Saturday against the Cincinnati Bengals as he sent a deep ball to Travis Kelce for a 36-yard pickup and fit the ball in a tight window for a first-quarter touchdown.

However, Mahomes came out firing in hopes of building on the momentum that saw him named second-team quarterback this week. The rookie pivot showed off his legs on his first drive, scrambling down to the one-yard line before throwing a short touchdown.

Mahomes continued to use his legs to make first downs, but also showed pocket presence by hooking up with De'Anthony Thomas for a 3rd and 14 conversion.

The rookie was successful on both drives he led, hitting Thomas on a screen pass to notch a second touchdown in the third quarter. Mahomes finished completing 10-of-14 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns with 29 rushing yards on three carries.

While Smith has been a successful starter for the Chiefs in terms of wins since 2013, Mahomes has established that his ceiling for success very high.
