Tony Romo gets slow-play penalty, misses cut at Western Amateur

Tony Romo wasn't known as being particularly fleet of foot during his NFL career, and it appears that holds true on the golf course, as well.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, and current CBS broadcaster, was assessed a one-stroke slow-play penalty during the Western Amateur near Chicago on Wednesday. Romo would shoot 80-82 over 36 holes at Skokie Country Club and miss the cut, beating only two players in the 155-person field.

"He was very gracious about it," tournament chief Vince Pellegrino told Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune. "His group fell behind and missed two checkpoints. The others in the group did not receive a penalty. They made an effort to close the gap. Tony readily accepted it."

Romo, who received a sponsor invite to the event, has shown his golf talent in various celebrity tournaments throughout his NFL career. He has also attempted to qualify numerous times for the US Open.

The struggles of Romo come at an interesting time in the celebrity golf world, as Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry attempts to make the cut in a Web.com Tour event in California that begins Thursday.

The two recently participated in the American Century Championship celebrity event at Lake Tahoe, with Curry finishing in fourth place, while Romo was well back in 16th.
