Report: Spurs could land Walker replacement Toljan for only £3.1M

Daniel Levy's shrewd approach as chairman could pocket Tottenham Hotspur around £46.9 million in a matter of days.

Following Kyle Walker's transfer to Manchester City worth up to £50 million on July 14, Spurs have identified Jeremy Toljan as a potential replacement, the Evening Standard's Tom Collomosse reports. The right-back may cost just £3.1 million, due to his Hoffenheim contract expiring at the end of the 2017-18 season.

His wage demands are also expected to fall comfortably under Tottenham's budget, and last season's runner-up is confident of beating Benfica to the Germany Under-21 international's signature as sources say he prefers a move to the Premier League.

Spurs should also be encouraged by the outlook of Alex Rosen, Hoffenheim's director of football.

"If Tottenham come in and offer to treble Toljan's salary, you cannot say: 'London is an unattractive city or Tottenham are a bad club,'" said Rosen. "This is all very positive, and then young people think about it."

Spurs' interest in Toljan reportedly coincides with backing out of the chase for FC Porto's Ricardo Pereira, who is now apparently being eyed by Juventus.

When Walker was granted a move, it was widely believed that duties on the right-hand side of defence would be taken by Kieran Trippier, with 20-year-old academy graduate Kyle Walker-Peters waiting in reserve. Mauricio Pochettino perhaps thought twice when he watched last Saturday's 4-2 friendly win over 10-man Paris Saint-Germain, which saw the Ligue 1 giant make inroads down Spurs' right and Walker-Peters at fault for one goal.

Tottenham rounds off its pre-season commitments against Roma, Manchester City, and Juventus before returning to Premier League duty at newly promoted Newcastle United on Aug. 13.
