Romero signs new contract at Manchester United

Manchester United's second-string shot-stopper Sergio Romero has signed a new contract with the club which sees him stay on at Old Trafford until June of 2021, with an option for one further year at that time.

The 30-year-old Argentina international - who helped the Red Devils win the UEFA Europa League last season as the preferred starting option through the tournament - said he was "delighted to have signed a new contract," and added: "Who wouldn't want to be at the biggest club in the world?" as quoted by the club's official website.

With a new deal now signed, he and David De Gea will continue to compete for a starting spot in Jose Mourinho's lineup, which Romero says he enjoys.

"We have great goalkeepers here and we are always learning from each other," Romero offered. "Of course, it was a very proud moment for me and my family to be part of the Europa League final, and I am looking forward to helping the team build on last season's success in 2017-18."

Mourinho, too, was pleased with this latest bit of club business.

"Sergio is a great goalkeeper and professional," Mourinho said. "He had a good season and outstanding performances, especially in our Europa League success. Sergio deserves his contract, and for Manchester United to have Sergio and David is amazing in such an important role."
