Defending HR Derby champ Stanton upset in 1st round by Sanchez

Jasen Vinlove / USA TODAY Sports

There won't be a repeat champion in the Home Run Derby.

Giancarlo Stanton, the winner of the 2016 edition, failed to best the 17 home runs mashed by New York Yankees backstop Gary Sanchez, coming up just one short with 16 at home at Marlins Park in their first-round matchup.

Stanton's loss wasn't for a lack of effort.

The Miami Marlins slugger managed to crank two home runs at over 490 feet, including a 496-foot bomb that left his bat at a whopping 117 mph.

In the other first-round contest, Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas was eliminated by Minnesota Twins slugger Miguel Sano, 11-10.

Sanchez will now move on to face Sano in the semi-final.
