3rd-party investigation of Hague's death to be launched in his hometown

The City of Edmonton will conduct a third-party investigation into the circumstances surrounding former MMA fighter Tim Hague's death.

Hague died at the age of 34 on Sunday as a result of brain injuries sustained in a boxing match two days earlier. The ominous bout took place in Edmonton, Alberta, which is Hague's hometown, and ended when he was knocked out by Adam Braidwood.

"We want to understand what happened and determine if there's anything we need to do better," deputy city manager Rob Smyth told reporters at a news conference Monday, according to Emily Mertz of Global News.

"Was this just a tragic event or are there lessons we can learn?" added Smyth.

Hague competed in the UFC from 2009-11, accumulating a 1-4 record. He scored a surprising victory via submission over Pat Barry in his first contest for the promotion before losing his next four.

Hague turned his attention to boxing in the latter portion of 2016 after dropping four of his last five MMA fights.
