Manchester United secured the signing of Victor Lindelof on a four-year contract Wednesday, four days after announcing it had reached a €35-million (£31-million) agreement to take the player from Benfica.

Lindelof, 22, will make his debut for the Red Devils during their summer tour of the U.S. in July.

"Victor is a very talented young player who has a great future ahead of him at United," manager Jose Mourinho said in a statement. "Our season last year showed us that we need options and quality to add depth to the squad and Victor is the first to join us this summer. I know that our fantastic group of players will welcome him as one of us."

Last weekend, United and Benfica revealed a deal had been reached over Lindelof, who could yet net his former club a further €10 million if certain bonuses are achieved, according to the Portuguese club.

All that was left was to agree to terms and conduct a medical with the Swede. He travelled to Manchester on Wednesday to complete the negotiation process.

A composed centre-back who can play the ball out from the back, Lindelof will likely partner with Eric Bailly in the heart of Mourinho's defence.

Lindelof is now the most expensive defender in club history, eclipsing the £30-million and £29.1-million fees paid to acquire Bailly and Rio Ferdinand, respectively.

Mourinho routinely complained about the attitude of his injured players last season, with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, and Luke Shaw the most common targets of public criticism. Now that Lindelof has arrived, Smalling and Jones in particular have little chance of breaking into the Portuguese's starting lineup.

Mourinho has reportedly already determined he will sell Smalling, who has spent the past seven years at United.

Lindelof joined Benfica in 2012 and went on to win the Primeira Liga on three occasions.
