Brewers' Shaw left team due to newborn daughter's open-heart surgery

After being reinstated from the family medical emergency list Tuesday, Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Travis Shaw revealed to reporters that his sudden absence was due to health concerns surrounding his newborn daughter Ryann, who had to undergo open-heart surgery Friday, according to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Ryann, who was born Tuesday, required surgery for hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a congenital defect where the left side of the heart does not develop fully in utero, Shaw said.

After her initial operation, she had a second procedure Saturday due to complications. Though she's now doing much better, Shaw admitted she will need to undergo further surgeries in the future.

Manager Craig Counsell didn't reveal the reason for Shaw going on the emergency list on Friday, leaving it to the infielder to divulge that information upon his return, though he did say the Brewers were keeping him in their thoughts throughout the weekend.

"It's just a situation where he needs to be at home," Counsell said then, according to MLB.com's Barry M. Bloom. "And he's in the right place right now. We're certainly all thinking about him. But he's where he should be."
