Report: Griezmann agrees to extend Atletico Madrid contract

Onetime Manchester United target Antoine Griezmann has decided to extend his contract with Atletico Madrid until 2022, prolonging his stay in the Spanish capital by a year, Marca's Alberto R. Barbero and AS.com's Jorge Garcia report.

A move to the Red Devils looked possible for Griezmann before the Court of Arbitration for Sport denied Atletico's appeal to overturn the club's transfer ban. That ruling played a role in his decision to turn down United - at least this year - and remain with Diego Simeone's side through the summer.

Having previously rated his chances of joining United at 60 percent, the 26-year-old later backtracked and pledged his allegiance to Los Rojiblancos.

"It's a hard time for the club. It would be a dirty move to leave now. We talked to the leaders and we will be back for next season," Griezmann said earlier this month.

The French international, who has a release clause set at €100 million, will earn a "considerable" pay rise, according to Garcia.

United reportedly dropped interest in Griezmann once it became clear the club wouldn't retain the services of injured striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Instead of Griezmann, the Old Trafford outfit instead focused its attention on an out-and-out poacher, with Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata allegedly agreeing to terms.

Whether United revives a bid for Griezmann next summer remains to be seen.

Despite a slow start to the 2016-17 campaign, the former Real Sociedad attacker finished the La Liga season with 16 goals and eight assists.
