Mickelson on Friday's 67: 'I hit a lot of really good shots today'

Phil Mickelson said his opening-round 69 was "kinda boring" Thursday at the St. Jude Classic, but on Friday it was vintage Mickelson.

The 46-year-old got out to a hot start on the TPC Southwind course, making six birdies in his first 13 holes, before stumbling down the stretch, finishing with a 3-under-par 67.

"I hit a lot of really good shots today, and had a chance to shoot something really low," Mickelson told the Golf Channel. "Unfortunately, didn't get the score out of it."

Mickelson was 5-under par for the day when he stood over his second shot at the par-4 ninth (his 18th), but his approach found the water, leading to a double bogey.

"It's a disappointing way to finish the round, I made a poor swing there and made double."

The five-time major champion missed just three fairways, found 13 greens in regulation, while needing only 28 putts.

"As well as I hit it today, it certainly was out there today. I just let it go, but we've got two more rounds, and it's encouraging how well and some of the shots I hit."
