Giants expect Beckham, Vernon to report for mandatory minicamp

A pair of New York Giants players who have sat out OTAs in recent weeks aren't expected to continue their absences when it really matters.

Confirming the widely held expectation for both, head coach Ben McAdoo announced Friday that he anticipates wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and defensive end Olivier Vernon to report for mandatory minicamp next week.

"Sure, I expect everyone to be here," McAdoo said, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan. "I'm not spending time talking about attendance. It's minicamp. We're looking forward to everyone being here next week."

Beckham's decision to stay away from voluntary spring workouts is reportedly related to his desire for a new contract. Now three years into his original rookie deal, thus eligible for an extension, the superstar wideout should command a record-setting salary, Raanan reported earlier this week.

Vernon's absence was thought to be more of a personal desire to continue a workout plan elsewhere. The 26-year-old is just one season into the five-year, $85-million deal he signed to join the Giants in free agency last March.

Beckham and Vernon not showing up for voluntary work drew no shortage of attention, particularly in the case of the latter, but both being in the mix next week should effectively end any and all drama.

All attention can then move ahead to the 2017 season, where the Giants will be hoping to take the next step and get back into Super Bowl contention.
