Volquez throws 6th no-hitter in Marlins history

Edinson Volquez couldn't have thrown a better tribute.

The Miami Marlins right-hander tossed the sixth no-hitter in franchise history Saturday in a 3-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on what would have been the 26th birthday of his former teammate, Yordano Ventura.

Volquez struck out pinch-hitter Chris Owings to record the final out of the game. He finished with 10 strikeouts over nine innings and walked two on 98 pitches for the first no-no of his 13-year career. He also finished the game 1-for-4 at the plate.

The 33-year-old has battled his share of adversity throughout his career. Volquez's father died during Game 1 of the 2015 World Series, though his wife requested he not be informed until after his start. His brother was also stabbed to death in the Dominican Republic in January.

While Volquez wasn't teammates with Jose Fernandez - having signed with the club this winter - he made sure to dedicate the no-hitter in his honor, and Ventura's.

"I dedicated this game to Jose Fernandez and Yordano Ventura," Volquez said on the broadcast.

Henderson Alvarez tossed the last Marlins no-hitter Sept. 29, 2013, which was also accomplished on 98 pitches.
