Panthers' Rivera: Ridiculing Benjamin's weight 'unfair'

Ron Rivera isn't happy with the criticism Kelvin Benjamin is receiving for his weight at OTAs.

The Carolina Panthers head coach admitted in April that Benjamin was "a little heavy," but said in early May he was pleased with the receiver's efforts to get into shape.

However, the videos and pictures of Benjamin at OTAs looking more like a tight end than a wideout led to a storm of jokes and disapproval online.

"A lot was made out of it that was unfair to be made out of it," Rivera said, according to Jourdan Rodrigue the Charlotte Observer. "Especially in a voluntary situation. But he's worked very hard. He's focused in on what he needs to do and he's done that. Now we as coaches need to stay on him to make sure he’s doing the right things."

There were rumors Benjamin had ballooned to 280 pounds this offseason, 35 more than his listed weight on the Panthers' roster.

Benjamin is entering a crucial season. Carolina picked up his 2018 fifth-year option, but that's only guaranteed for injury. The 26-year-old could be in line for a significant payday if he's able to take the next step in his development and prove he can be a reliable No. 1 target for Cam Newton.
