Collins 'not at liberty to discuss' Mets' injuries

The New York Mets' festival of sadness continues.

Outfielder Jay Bruce, one of the team's lone bright spots, missed Wednesday's game after leaving Tuesday's game with lower back tightness.

It's not his injury making the news, though, but Mets manager Terry Collins' refusal to discuss it, according to the New York Post's Fred Kerber.

"No disrespect. I’m not going to get into the injury stuff," Collins said.

Collins added that his hands are tied when it comes to the team's injuries.

“I’m not at liberty to discuss any injury situation. He’ll be in there when he’s in there,” he said.

The suggestion here is that Mets brass has issued a decree that Collins is no longer permitted to discuss the litany of ailments. Collins wouldn't address the decision, but said he doesn't think the injury issues are anything out of the ordinary, according to the New York Daily News' John Harper.

"We don’t have any reason to think it’s something we’re doing or not doing that causes injuries," Collins said. "It’s not like we have five guys out with hamstring injuries. If that was the case, I’d say, ‘yeah, we need to take a look at the way we do things.’

"But that’s not the case. And other teams have injuries too, by the way. It’s just the way it is in baseball."

Injuries certainly do happen, but the Mets have been particularly snakebitten. Starting pitchers Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz, and Seth Lugo are all on the disabled list, while closer Jeurys Familia isn't expected back until September. Yoenis Cespedes and Asdrubal Cabrera are still out, and catcher Travis d'Arnaud is only now returning to the club.

For the time being, at least, Collins won't be the person to go to for updates.
