Browns' Jackson: Osweiler has 'done a good job' in offseason workouts

Might Brock Osweiler actually get the chance to compete for a roster spot in Cleveland?

Reports of Osweiler's inevitable departure - either by way of trade or an outright release - surfaced immediately after the veteran quarterback was acquired in a salary-dump deal with the Houston Texans earlier this offseason.

Two months later, though, no such move has taken shape, and Browns head coach Hue Jackson seems impressed by what he's seen in the early stages of spring workouts.

"He's done a good job," Jackson said, according to Pat McManamon of ESPN. "He's been great in the room with the guys. He's been a good person in the building. We're going to continue to allow him to do that and see what he has to show for us and kind of go from there."

It's entirely possible that Cleveland still moves on from Osweiler, one way or another, before the 2017 season gets underway, but there's certainly no harm in allowing him to compete given that his $16-million salary will remain on the books regardless.

A strong showing in preseason action - or should Osweiler beat out Cody Kessler and second-round pick DeShone Kizer for the starting job - could even create some trade value for a Browns team that's intent on stockpiling draft picks.

The trade that sent Osweiler from Houston to Cleveland came just one season into the four-year, $72-million deal he signed as a free agent after leaving the Denver Broncos. Starting 14-of-15 appearances in 2016, Osweiler completed just 59 percent of his passes for 2,957 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions.
