Collins happy with Harvey's apology, wants to see words in action

While the specifics of what Matt Harvey told his teammates on Tuesday behind closed doors aren't public, the Mets starter apparently said the right things.

In a pregame presser later that afternoon on SportsNet New York, manager Terry Collins gave an abbreviated "yes" when asked if he was happy with Harvey's apology.

Harvey was out Friday night until around 4 a.m., and played golf on Saturday before eventually missing that day's game. Even though he wasn't penciled into Saturday's lineup, his absence didn't go over well with the team, and Harvey was subsequently suspended for his planned start on Sunday.

He publicly apologized on Tuesday, but also spoke to the team in private.

"He gave it some great thought, and certainly did it the right way you're supposed to," Collins told reporters. "He didn't mince words with anybody."

Collins added that actions ultimately speak louder than words, and that Harvey will have to back up his apology with his play and how he carries himself.

"It's the old saying, you know, I wish I could tell you the amount of times somebody would say to me, 'Hey, I'm going to do this' and the answer I give him is 'Don't tell me, show me.'"

Collins also spoke briefly about the support available to Harvey, including former Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon, who reached out via text message.
